How to Mount a Handrail on Top of a Ledge or Wall

When a handrail has to sit above a ledge, a knee wall, or the top of a stair wall, you do not need a special bracket. You can build the mount from our standard handrail parts, and you set the height yourself by cutting one short piece of tube.

This is useful when the top of the wall is too low to grab and the handrail needs to be raised to a graspable height.

How it works

The mount is a short vertical post. It threads into the ledge at the bottom and carries the handrail at the top:

Hanger bolt → threaded end cap → short piece of tube → tube adapter → handrail

The short piece of tube is what sets the offset. Cut it longer for a higher handrail, shorter for a lower one.

Round handrail

Parts you need, per mounting point

You will also need two-part epoxy and self-tapping screws.

Step by step

  1. Screw the hanger bolt into the ledge. Drill your pilot hole in the top of the ledge and thread the hanger bolt in, leaving the machine-thread end standing up.
  2. Thread the round end cap onto the hanger bolt. The end cap has a threaded hole in its face that takes the bolt. Run it down until it sits flat on the ledge.
  3. Cut the short piece of round tube to your offset height. Measure from the top of the ledge to where you want the underside of the handrail, then subtract the height of the end cap and the tube adapter. Cut the tube to that length and deburr both ends.
  4. Bond the short tube onto the end cap with two-part epoxy, following our bonding guide.
  5. Screw the tube adapter into the handrail before you bond anything. Set the adapter against the underside of the handrail and fasten it with self-tapping screws, while you can still handle the parts freely.
  6. Bond the tube adapter onto the top of the short tube. Apply epoxy, seat the adapter over the tube, and hold the handrail in position until the epoxy sets.

Every fitting in this assembly is epoxy-bonded — the end cap to the short tube, and the adapter to the short tube. The only mechanical fasteners are the hanger bolt into the ledge and the self-tapping screws into the handrail.

Square handrail

The square version works the same way, with one difference: there is no tube adapter. You use a threaded end cap at the bottom and at the top. The flat face of the top end cap sits directly against the flat underside of the square handrail.

Hanger bolt → threaded square end cap → short piece of square tube → threaded square end cap → handrail

Parts you need, per mounting point

  • Wall bracket screw or hanger bolt
  • Square end cap with threaded hole — bottom
  • Square tube by the foot — for the short offset piece
  • Square end cap with threaded hole — top
  • Square tube by the foot — for the handrail itself

Plus two-part epoxy and self-tapping screws.

Step by step

  1. Screw the hanger bolt into the ledge. Drill your pilot hole in the top of the ledge and thread the hanger bolt in, leaving the machine-thread end standing up.
  2. Thread the bottom end cap onto the hanger bolt. Run it down until it sits flat on the ledge.
  3. Cut the short piece of square tube to your offset height. Measure from the top of the ledge to the underside of the handrail, then subtract the height of both end caps. Cut and deburr.
  4. Bond the short tube onto the bottom end cap with two-part epoxy.
  5. Bond the top end cap onto the upper end of the short tube. Keep the cap square to the tube while the epoxy sets, so the handrail sits straight.
  6. Fasten the handrail to the top end cap with self-tapping screws. Square meets square, so the two flat faces sit tight against each other and no adapter is needed.

Both end caps are epoxy-bonded to the short tube. The only mechanical fasteners are the hanger bolt into the ledge and the self-tapping screws into the handrail.

  • Cut one piece first and test-fit it before cutting the rest, so all your mounts end up at the same height.
