Wood Handrail Fastening Guide
Use a #10 × 1-1/4 in. stainless-steel Phillips pan-head screw to attach the bracket saddle to a solid wood handrail.
This recommendation is for the bracket-to-wood-handrail connection. It is not the fastener specification for mounting the bracket base to a wall.
Why This Screw
- The pan head bears flat against the bracket saddle; do not substitute a countersunk flat-head screw unless the specific bracket instructions require one.
- The coarse, fully threaded shank provides secure engagement in solid wood.
- Stainless steel provides corrosion resistance and is compatible with Inline Design stainless-steel brackets.
- Use 304 / 18-8 stainless steel for most interior and standard exterior locations. Use 316 stainless steel for coastal, pool-area, or high-corrosion environments.
Before Installation
- Confirm the handrail is solid wood or an approved engineered-wood product with adequate thickness at every bracket location.
- Check the screw length against the actual saddle thickness and wood thickness. The screw must not break through the finished top or side of the handrail.
- If 1-1/4 in. is too long, use a shorter #10 stainless-steel pan-head screw that preserves adequate wood engagement without penetrating the visible surface.
- Use every saddle mounting hole provided by the bracket.
Installation
- Position and center the handrail on the bracket saddle.
- Mark every saddle hole.
- Pre-drill the wood, especially hardwood, to reduce splitting and screw breakage. Match the pilot hole to the screw manufacturer's recommendation and the wood species; the pilot should follow the screw's root diameter, not the outside thread diameter.
- Drive the screws straight and tighten until the saddle is fully seated. Do not overtighten or strip the wood.
- Confirm the handrail is rigid and recheck every connection before use.
Do not use the #10 × 1-1/4 in. screw to mount the bracket base to the wall.
Wall mounting is a separate structural connection. The bracket base must attach to wood framing or approved structural blocking, steel framing with suitable hardware, or concrete/masonry with rated anchors. Do not rely on drywall alone. Select the wall fastener from the bracket's product instructions and Mounting Surface Options, and have the connection verified for the project substrate and required loads.
