Tempered, or toughened, glass is a type of safety glass processed with controlled thermal or chemical treatment to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension; when broken, tempered glass shatters into small, granular chunks rather than the jagged shards produced by ordinary annealed glass, making the pieces less likely to cause injury.
