Overview

Customers are encouraged to call their local city to get information about their local building codes. Local building codes supersede national building codes. Inline Design is providing this information in an advisory capacity only and is not liable for any code non-compliance.

Adult Height Requirements:

Top of gripping surfaces of handrails shall be 34 inches (865 mm) minimum and 38 inches (965 mm) maximum vertically above walking surfaces, stair nosings, and ramp surfaces. Handrails shall be at a consistent height above walking surfaces, stair nosings, and ramp surfaces.

    1. Height from Surface 34" - 38"
    2. Consistent height Across Run

Adult ADA Height Requirements

Children Height Requirements:

When children are the principal users in a building or facility (e.g., elementary schools), a second set of handrails at an appropriate height can assist them and aid in preventing accidents. A maximum height of 28 inches (710 mm) measured to the top of the gripping surface from the ramp surface or stair nosing is recommended for handrails designed for children. Sufficient vertical clearance between upper and lower handrails, 9 inches (230 mm) minimum, should be provided to help prevent entrapment.

    1. Height from Surface Max 28"
    2. Vertical Clearance between handrails Min 9"
    3. Consistent height Across Run

Instructions

  1. Mount the posts to the floor or the brackets to the wall before installing the handrail tube. Please refer to other instructions document found on our website for help in that operation
  2. Place the handrail tubing on the saddles. Mark the drilling points using a marker
  3. It’s very important not to skip this point otherwise the drill bit will skid. Remove the handrail then place it on a working table. Mark the drilling points with a center punch. Repeat this several times in the same location to give a good guide for the drill bit.
  4. Use the corresponding drill bit size shown in table above.
  5. Apply cutting fluid on the drill bit.
  6. Hold firm but without pressing too hard the hand-drill then gradually apply pressure to drill through the top rail with stopping a couple of times to reapply the cutting fluid. Complete all marked location.
  7. Replace the drill bit with the corresponding tap bit shown in table.
  8. Apply cutting fluid on the tap. Tapping is to be done at a slower speed then drilling. Start at a slow speed then increase the speed once the tap catches a couple of threads.
  9. Reverse the direction of the drill to remove the tap remembering to carefully keep the tap bit straight.
